I'm Alice

I enjoy creating great looking, functional and secure websites and providing friendly local service to businesses in Singleton and the Hunter Valley. While your business website could be developed from anywhere in the world it is hard to beat old-fashioned, face-to-face service.
Whether you are a start-up business, never had a website or want to revitalise an old site, it can be hard to know where to start. While it seems that you can pay a lot of money for someone else to do it or try and navigate the jargon yourself, there is an alternative. You know your business, I know the technical bits and by working together we can develop you a modern web presence.

A modern website is essential

A web presence has become essential for every business. Customers and potential customers want to be able to find and understand your business by a simple internet search. Even if you advertise your business via other means, the modern customer demands to be able to see more details, read the fine print, and contact you from the web.

Up to date

Static or out-of-date websites can reduce the confidence that potential customers have in your business. I aim to build websites that are easy to update. I offer training in doing these regular updates and can also include regular updates as part of the maintenance period.

Often people will be using a mobile device (smart phone or tablet) to look up your business, so it is important that your website is able to resize to the size of the device that people are using to view it. This is called “responsive” or “mobile-friendly” and is part of what I mean when I say “functional.”

Security Maintenance

“An estimated 37,000 websites are hacked every day.” You don’t want your website to be among them. So that you can focus on your business, I offer ongoing maintenance with all websites that I develop to ensure the integrity of the system as new software vulnerabilities are discovered.

In addition to security updates, I monitor each site’s performance and ensure that the website is backed up regularly.

Registering a new website name (this is the address people use to go to your site). I can also help renew existing domain names.

All websites are hosted on a web server which is a computer usually located in a data centre. I use a hosting provider with servers in Sydney and can arrange hosting for you.

Email Addresses

Often business email addresses are related to the website name (e.g. alice@alicemaywebdesign.com.au). I can arrange for these to be provided as part of the web hosting service.

Technical Assistance

From time to time there can be problems with web servers that affect your site or emails. The hosting companies provide technical support via online logging or telephone, but you have to talk their language (geek-speak). I would normally include liaising with the hosting company as part of the ongoing maintenance of your site.

As websites are visual, the quality of any images used is important. Your site might need additional photos, or higher quality ones than snaps from your phone camera. I can work with your photos, but if you need more, I recommend Clear Light Photography and can include a photoshoot in my proposal to you.

If you don’t already have a Facebook page I can set one up for you. It is good to have one, even if it is a simple static page that directs people to your website.

The content of your site (words and photos) has to be developed by someone. You are probably the best person, because you know your business, but be warned, this is no small job. I will need your help to ensure your site communicates what you want, in the way you want. Also I have worked with a number of people who can help develop and edit the content, so we can develop a plan to suit your needs.

I offer daily, weekly and monthly backups stored on Dropbox.

Dropbox is also a great tool for transferring content. This may be new to you, so I can explain and help you navigate this technology if we need it.

I use WordPress to create the websites. WordPress is a free and open-source content management system. WordPress powers more than 24% of the web and is used by more than 74 million websites.

In Closing

You can expect a fixed price design, development and maintenance tailored to your business needs, as well as quick communication. This includes regular status reports throughout the development period.

I distinguish my business from the large name developers by providing personal, friendly service – a person you can call for help.
